You Dirty Dog

Infamy, infamy, they’ve all got it in for me…Not sure if Carry on Cleo ever made it to Costa Rica but one imagines that local artist Guillermo Vargas might empathise with the struggling Caesar. Millions have signed a petition calling for galleries to reject his work, so far 400,000 people intend to reject his friend requests on Facebook, and one blogger wants to stab him in the head. All because of his installation where a tethered dog starved to death while Vargas played the national anthem backwards, simultaneously burning 175 tabs of crack.
Or not really. The Códice Gallery in Nicaragua assured me that “Navidad” was allowed to roam free in the gallery and given a steady supply of dog biscuits until those lazy cabrons guarding the poor dog let him escape. Anyway even if after all the furore, Vargas does decide a bit of animal cruelty is the way to hit the headlines he will have a bit of a job. The Museo de la Identidad in Honduras where he intends to exhibit has just stated it will “not consent nor allow the exploitation, abuse or use of animals for artistic means under any circumstance in the realization of this cultural event.” Silly man should have just cut Navidad in half.
